The 34th America’s Cup is the eleventh straight AC campaign for Tom Ehman. A consummate veteran of international yachting, he has been at the forefront of many of the changes and innovations that have transformed top-level sailing into the modern, professional and more media-friendly sport that it is today. Notably, Tom spearheaded on-the-water umpiring that has been used in the America’s Cup since he instituted it for the 1992 Cup in San Diego.

A former collegiate and North American sailing champion, and winner of the 1976 Championship of Champions, at age 25 he became the youngest-ever Executive Director of the USA’s national sailing association – indeed, the youngest of any national governing body for an Olympic sport in America. Since he started with the America’s Cup in 1980, Tom has served in many roles including rules advisor, team executive, event manager, and chairman of the Challenger Commission. He is the only person of long-standing involvement in the Cup who has worked only for American campaigns – New York YC, San Diego YC,
St. Francis YC, and now Golden Gate YC.

For the past three campaigns, Tom was Head of External Affairs for ORACLE Racing. He now serves as GGYC Vice Commodore and Managing Director of the GGYC America’s Cup Committee, and is Executive Director of America’s Cup Properties, Inc.

The Sausalito Yacht Club in conjunction with local Hobie Fleet 281 and the North American

Hobie Class Association are hosting the 2012 Hobie 16 & 20 North American Championships in Sausalito, California.

Seventy colorful Hobie catamarans will be launching from Dunphy Park. The races for this prestigious event will be held between Knox and Yellow Bluff. On Saturday and Sunday June 16 & 17, the teams will weigh the boats and prep them for racing. Monday through Friday June 18 – 22, races will start around 11:00am daily and run throughout the day until about 4:00pm dependent upon weather conditions.

Teams from as far away as Fiji, Brazil, Puerto Rico and Canada are coming to the USA to compete with some of the top USA racing teams making this a top level event.

Spectators are welcome to intermingle with competitors in Dunphy Park before they launch and at the end of each day after a great day of racing on the bay.

Information and continual updates will be found on the www.hcana.hobieclass.com event web site with a list of competitors and daily race results plus photos posted throughout the week.

A raffle will be held during the event to benefit the Sausalito Yacht Club and Hobie youth programs. Information and tickets are available at the Dunphy Park race site.

Volunteer to be part of the action on and off the water with 70 colorful Hobies from North America and beyond.
