Join Cruise Chair Thomas Perry as we venture outside the Golden Gate to visit the spectacular Farallone Islands.  This cruise occurs during prime whale watching season, so bring your binoculars and cameras!

For an offshore cruise like this one, especially if it is your first, it is nice to join an organized cruise.

This is a long cruise (26.3 nautical miles each way), so plan on a full day (at least the sailboats).  We will plan to meet under the Golden Gate Bridge at 7:30 AM with a roll call at 7:35 AM.  All boats should call Polonaise II at 7:35 AM on VHF channel 72.  We will repeat the roll call at the top of every hour with latitude and longitude readings to keep track of our “fleet”.  Thomas will be monitoring both VHF channel 16 and 72 for the entire trip.

We will be leaving on a flood tide (2.22 kts), which will slow us down a bit, but is safer than leaving on an ebb, when the ebb tide conflicts with the prevailing west/northwest winds and can create rougher seas.  If the winds are typical (west or northwest) we may be sailing upwind all the way out, so you may want to fill your fuel tank before you leave.

If you can, please try to attend Thomas’ seminar on Thursday, March 15, 6:30 PM at the Club.  The seminar topic is Coastal Cruising – Are You Ready?, which fits nicely with this cruise (especially if it is your first offshore trip).  Thomas will hold a very brief skipper’s briefing for this cruise following the seminar on Thursday.

Because of the length of the cruise, we haven’t “bundled” dinner at the Club with this cruise.  Cheryl Popp (SYC Entertainment Chair) has planned a great St. Patrick’s Day party at the club, with live music and the traditional corned beef & cabbage feast.  If you think you would like to end the evening at the Club, please make your own individual reservations for the party.

There is no charge for this cruise.

Join Cruise Chair Eric Chipps for a short cruise across the Bay to Ballena Bay Yacht Club in Alameda.  The weekend will include our traditional “docktails” followed by a Mardi Gras Party at the Yacht Club (dinner, band and dancing).  Go all out with a full-blown costume or keep it simple with masks and/or beads.

About the Evening

Docktails will begin at 5 PM.  Dick Marsh has generously offered Amble, his DeFever 44, for us to assemble and share potluck appetizers and BYOB beverages.

Dinner is a fixed menu, at a cost of $25/person.  The menu will include:

9 Layer Salad, Seafood Gumbo, Creole Chicken, Red Beans and Rice (Vegetarian and Non-Vegetarian), Cornbread and Cake and Ice Cream

Dinner will be served at 7 PM, dancing will begin at 8 PM.  (The club will be open for cocktails from 5 PM.)

Slips/Berthing

Berthing costs for reciprocating clubs are $30 per vessel for the weekend, whether one or two nights. The berthing costs should be paid to the Marina Office on arrival: they also ask for evidence of title and insurance when paying. Slip numbers will be advised beforehand and the Port Captain will be there to assist. Marina chart and approaches attached.

Join us at Sausalito Yacht Club for our “3rd Thursday” event.  Our speaker will be Thomas Perry, Lead Instructor for Club Nautique and an SYC member.  Thomas teaches the 5-day Offshore Cruising class for Club Nautique and has generously offered to share his expertise with us.  He will cover preparations, planning, safety, equipment, weather and information resources to plan and carry out an enjoyable and safe trip along our beautiful Northern California coast.  There will be time after the presentation for questions, then feel free to join Thomas and your fellow participants for drinks and/or dinner at the Club.

America’s Cup World Series 2011-2012: Television and Internet Schedule

The flag is code for the letter P and more properly referred to as Prepare to Sail. Even today all ships carry a set of code flags covering the letters of the alphabet and numbers 0 to 9. The flags are hoisted up a mast in groups and sequences to either spell complete messages or in combinations to mean specific things. The nick name the “Blue Peter” comes from its blue color and Peter because in the old days Peter was the phonetic way of saying P for Peter.

The 2011 Bylaws Committee is preparing a final draft of proposed revisions to the SYC Bylaws. Thank you to those who have provided your input.

We would like to solicit suggestions from members once again prior to finalizing proposed revisions.

If you have suggestions, please submit them as soon as possible, following these guidelines:

• Cite the exact Article, Section and Line in the bylaws that you think should be revised
• Provide a suggested language that you feel should replace existing language
• Provide a rationale for how you believe the suggested revision would benefit the club

You may submit your suggestions by email at: bylaws@sausalitoyachtclub.org.

The Bylaws Committee will not be able to consider suggestions that do not conform to the points listed above.

We want to thank you for your patience while we worked our way through
this important information technology upgrade and we are reasonably
certain that we fixed the problems associated with member billings.
However, we have taken the precaution to mail paper statements this
month as well as e-bills to assure everyone gets their bill.

As you know, SYC changed its policy regarding members paying their
monthly SYC bill by allowing checks only, with no credit card option.
This was done to save considerable bank fees associated with credit card
processing.

Since we no longer use the credit card as a backstop for payment (except
for delinquent members), monthly collection of member accounts is taking
more and more time. Because of this I would like to remind all of you of
our by-laws in this area which say in part:

“Indebtedness to the club not discharged within 30 days of the due date
shall become delinquent. If not paid within an additional 30 days, the
name of the member shall be posted by the Membership Chair in the
Clubhouse and membership will be suspended automatically until such
indebtedness is paid in full.”

This means that the August billing, for example, will become delinquent
30 days from the original due date (in this case by September 15, 2011,
30 days after the original due date of August 15, 2011).

If still unpaid 30 days later (in this case October 15, 2011), the
members name shall be posted in the Clubhouse and the members ability to
charge shall be suspended until the balance is paid.

Most of you pay your club bill diligently and we sincerely thank you for
that. We don’t have the manpower to spend time collecting past due
accounts and it is my hope that enforcing our by-laws will help us cut
down on this collection time. Our General Manager will mitigate any
problem caused by the failure of the club to get a member bill out timely.

Our job is not entirely finished but it is getting there. Again, thank
you for your patience.

At least ninety (90) days prior to the November meeting of the Flag Officers and Chairs, the Secretary will remind the membership via the Club newsletter and via postings on the website and in the Club House of the need for an incoming Nominating Committee. Members interested in serving on the Nominating Committee shall come forward and advise the Secretary, in writing, of their desire to serve on the incoming Nominating Committee. The Secretary will report all such communications to the Flag Officers and Chairs and to the Executive Board. Interested members in good standing will be placed on the ballot and stand for election to the Nominating Committee at the Annual Meeting. Current members of the Nominating Committee who were previously elected by the voting membership may run for re-election provided they have not already served three consecutive terms.

Article X: Election of Executive Board Members And Flag Officers and Chairs

Section 1: The club shall maintain a Nominating Committee comprised of five (5) members in good standing. Only Regular, Honorary, and Senior members may serve on the Nominating Committee and shall have been members for at least five (5) years. The duty of the Nominating Committee is to identify and present a suitable slate of candidates to the voting membership for the offices to be filled at the annual election. It shall be the mandate of the Nominating Committee to present a slate of candidates that represent the diverse and varied interests of the general membership and that are qualified to hold the office for which they are nominated.

Section 1a: The Nominating Committee shall use all available resources to identify candidates, verify experience and competencies, including skills assessment against job descriptions, reference checking, interviews and observations at Club meetings and in social settings.

Section 1b: The Nominating Committee is a standing committee and its members will serve one (1) year terms from January 1 to December 31. The Nominating Committee will be comprised of the following members:

• The Elected member of the Executive Board whose term has just expired; or so recommended by the Executive Board if a termed out Executive Board member does not exist.

• Three (3) members elected by the voting membership at the Annual Meeting in November for a term of one (1) year. Members in good standing may serve up to three (3) consecutive terms on the Nominating Committee, provided they are elected in accordance with these Bylaws. Members in good standing may serve up to three (3) consecutive terms on the Nominating Committee, provided they are re-appointed;

• The incoming Junior Staff Commodore for a one (1) year term

As we all are aware, our bylaws underwent substantial revision in 2010. Upon adoption, the newly revised by-laws have clarified areas of responsibility for the members of the Executive Board and the Flag Officers and Chairs.

The SYC Executive board has established a bylaws committee for 2011 to continue review of the club bylaws and solicit additional input from members who may have identified areas that can be improved.

If you have thoughts for enhancements to the club bylaws, we ask that you submit them in writing to the committee in order for them to be considered by the Board and membership. Your suggestions should also include a rationale for adoption of suggested changes.

Also, please include your contact information so that the committee members may contact you to discuss your ideas.

The plan is to race off the club dock and in front of the club and Gabrielson Park for best control and viewing. The preliminary schedule is every other Thursday beginning June 2nd through August. We will have categories for both sail and power. A number of members say they have RC boats, including Ron Anderson, Tammy Blanchard, Scott Foote and Mike Magruder.

With a couple of preliminary races, we will get the classes identified and the races all set up.

If you don’t have a boat come on down and cheer the racers on. Thursdays are BBQ night too, so there’s plenty of fun for all.

If you have a boat please register so we can plan adequately. We will also have a chase boat to manage the races.
